Hypocrite

Jesus uses this word to cut through the Pharisees' and Herodians' flattery, exposing that their opening compliment is pure performance designed to lower his guard before springing the tax question.

The Hypocrite serves as Jesus's recurring negative example in this section — someone who fasts, prays, and gives, but does all three as a performance to manage their reputation rather than as genuine devotion to God.

The hypocrite appears as Paul's example of someone the reader feels entitled to judge — but Paul uses it as a mirror, warning that the standard applied to others will be applied to the reader.
