The Persian queen who refused to be paraded before the king's guests
Queen Vashti refused King Xerxes' command to display her beauty at a banquet. She was deposed, which opened the door for Esther to become queen. Her refusal took real courage.
Meanwhile, on the Other Side of the Palace
Esther 1:9Vashti is introduced here hosting her own banquet for the women of the palace — she is not idle or invisible, which makes her refusal moments later entirely credible.
The Girl Nobody Saw Coming
Vashti's absence is the inciting wound of this chapter — her banishment by royal decree is what creates the opening through which Esther will eventually step.
