A Jewish revolutionary movement that wanted to overthrow Roman occupation by force — the political radicals of Jesus' day
The Zealots believed armed resistance was the faithful response to Roman oppression. They saw compromise with Rome as betrayal of God. Simon the Zealot was one of Jesus' twelve disciples — which means Jesus' inner circle included both a tax collector who worked for Rome (Matthew) and a revolutionary who wanted to destroy it. That's a striking statement about the kind of community Jesus was building.
