Joseph's younger son who got the greater blessing — and became a major tribe

When Jacob blessed Joseph's sons, he crossed his hands and gave Ephraim the greater blessing despite being younger — a recurring biblical theme (Genesis 48). The tribe of Ephraim became so dominant in the north that 'Ephraim' was sometimes used as a synonym for the entire northern kingdom of Israel.
