A walled city in upper Galilee at the headwaters of the Jordan, often called "a mother in Israel" for its reputation as a place of wise counsel. When the rebel Sheba son of Bichri fled there during Absalom's revolt, Joab besieged the city — but a wise woman called from the wall, negotiated Sheba's surrender, and the city threw his head over the wall (2 Samuel 20:14-22). Ben-hadad of Aram later sacked Abel-beth-maacah for King Asa of Judah (1 Kings 15:20), and Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria carried its population into exile in 732 BC (2 Kings 15:29).
