The Macedonian capital city Paul passed through on the Via Egnatia between Philippi and Thessalonica
MacedoniaAmphipolis was the capital of Macedonia's first Roman district, on the east bank of the Strymon River 50 km west of Philippi on the great imperial highway called the Via Egnatia. Acts 17:1 mentions it as a transit point on Paul's second missionary journey: "when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica." Famous for the gold and silver mines of the surrounding Pangaion hills and for the colossal Lion of Amphipolis monument, the city was a major Roman administrative centre — but Paul did not stop to preach, marching through to find the next Jewish synagogue at Thessalonica.
