Fortified Shephelah city near the Valley of Elah — last stronghold to fall before Lachish in Jeremiah's day
ShephelahHistorically Verified
Excavated since 1898, with renewed digs by Tel Aviv University. The famous Lachish Letters from the Babylonian siege period mention Azekah by name — exactly matching Jeremiah's account.
A fortified city in the Judean Shephelah at the head of the Valley of Elah, where Joshua pursued the fleeing Amorite kings and where the Lord cast hailstones from heaven that killed more enemies than Israel's swords (Joshua 10:10-11). Centuries later, the Philistine army camped between Socoh and Azekah for the battle where David killed Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1). Rehoboam rebuilt it as a defensive city (2 Chronicles 11:9), and it was one of the last two Judean strongholds standing during the Babylonian siege under Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 34:7) — confirmed by the famous Lachish Letters.
