A town near Lod resettled by exiles returning from Babylon
ShephelahHadid was a town in the Shephelah near Lod and Ono, settled by Benjaminites who returned from the Babylonian captivity (Ezra 2:33, Nehemiah 7:37, 11:34). In the post-exilic listing of returnees, 725 men of Lod, Hadid, and Ono came back together. The site is identified with el-Haditheh (modern Hadid near Lod, east of Tel Aviv), strategically placed on the route between the coastal plain and the Judean hill country. During the Maccabean period Simon fortified Adida (the Greek form of Hadid) as a stronghold against the Seleucids (1 Maccabees 12:38, 13:13).
