A Shephelah town in Judah named for the Philistine fish-god Dagon
ShephelahBeth-dagon ("house of Dagon") was a Shephelah town in Judah's tribal inheritance (Joshua 15:41), named for the Philistine fish-god Dagon — testimony to how deeply Canaanite and Philistine cultic influence had penetrated the lowland border zone between Judah and the Mediterranean coast. A second Beth-dagon in Asher's allotment appears in Joshua 19:27. The Sennacherib annals also mention a Beth-Dagon among the cities the Assyrian king captured in 701 BCE. The Judean site is generally identified with Khirbet Dajun (modern Bet Dagan) in the inner Shephelah.
