A Simeonite Negev town the same as Bethul in Joshuas alternate spelling tradition
NegevChesil ("foolish") was a Simeonite Negev town named in Joshua 15:30: "And Eltolad, and Chesil, and Hormah." The parallel list in Joshua 19:4 names the same site (or a closely related one) as "Bethul" — the two spellings appear to reflect different scribal traditions for the same Negev settlement. The town lay in the western Negev between Beersheba and Ziklag, in the cluster of small Simeonite frontier holdings that were absorbed into the larger southern Judean population during the early monarchy.
