An Egyptian city to which Hezekiahs envoys traveled seeking Pharaohs aid against Assyria
EgyptHanes was a Lower Egyptian city to which Hezekiah's envoys journeyed seeking Egyptian military aid against the Assyrian threat — a strategy the prophet Isaiah denounced: "For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes. They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them" (Isaiah 30:4-5). Isaiah's broader oracle (Isa 30:1-7) condemned the entire policy of seeking Egyptian help rather than trusting the Lord: "Egypt shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still." The site of Hanes is generally identified with Heracleopolis Magna in middle Egypt, on the western edge of the Nile delta.
