A Babylonian settlement of returnees who could not prove their priestly Israelite descent
BabyloniaImmer was one of five named Babylonian settlements — alongside Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, and Addon — from which exiles attempted to return to Judah under Zerubbabel but could not produce genealogical records proving Aaronide descent (Ezra 2:59, Nehemiah 7:61). Three priestly families came specifically from Immer: the sons of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai. Without verified pedigrees they were excluded "as unclean" pending Urim-and-Thummim resolution. The name Immer also appears as a priestly family-head still serving in Jerusalem in the post-exile period (Nehemiah 11:13) — possibly survivors who did manage to verify their lineage.
