The wilderness town from which Moses sent envoys of peace to Sihon king of the Amorites
ReubenKedemoth ("eastern parts") lay in the wilderness east of the Arnon River on the Reubenite plateau. As Israel approached the Promised Land from the east, Moses sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of the Amorites at Heshbon, asking for peaceful passage: "Let me pass through your land; I will go only along the highway... sell me food for money that I may eat" (Deuteronomy 2:26-29). Sihon refused and marched out to fight at Jahaz — and lost. Kedemoth was then allotted to Reuben and later set aside as a Levitical town for the Merarite clan (Joshua 13:18, 21:37, 1 Chronicles 6:79).
