A Reubenite Levitical town on the wilderness plateau — named in Jeremiahs oracle against Moab
ReubenMephaath was a town in the Transjordan, on the plateau north of the Arnon River. It was allotted to the tribe of Reuben after the defeat of Sihon king of the Amorites (Joshua 13:18) and later set apart as one of the Levitical cities for the Merarite clan (Joshua 21:37, 1 Chronicles 6:79). By the time of Jeremiah, the city had passed into Moabite control and is named in the prophet's sweeping oracle against Moab alongside Heshbon, Dibon, Aroer, and Bozrah (Jeremiah 48:21). Likely identified with Tell Jawah in modern Jordan, near Amman.
