A frontier town in Judahs far-southern Negev inheritance later allotted to the tribe of Simeon as Beth-lebaoth
NegevLebaoth ("lionesses") appears once in Joshua 15:32 as one of the cities of Judah's southernmost Negev allotment: "Lebaoth, and Shilhim, and Ain, and Rimmon: all the cities are twenty and nine, with their villages." The same town reappears in the Simeonite allotment a few chapters later as Beth-lebaoth: "Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages" (Joshua 19:6). The double listing reflects the fact that Simeon's tribal allotment lay entirely within the southern half of Judah's territory — Simeon eventually merged into Judah and the towns appear in both catalogs. The exact site remains unidentified by archaeology.
