A Phoenician coastal town in the Asher allotment which Israel failed to drive out at the conquest
PhoeniciaMahalab (also spelled Ahlab in Judges 1:31) appears as one of the Phoenician coastal towns within the tribal allotment of Asher: "And the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib, Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher" (Joshua 19:29-31). Judges 1:31 lists Mahalab/Ahlab among the towns Asher could not drive out: "Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho... nor of Ahlab." The site is identified with Khirbet el-Mahalib about four miles northeast of Tyre.
