Compound at Ramah where Samuel's school of the prophets protected David from Saul
BenjaminHistorically Verified
Naioth is best understood as a quarter or compound within Ramah of Benjamin — modern er-Ram just north of Jerusalem. The name comes from the Hebrew root for "dwellings."
A district or compound at Ramah in Benjamin where Samuel ran a school of the prophets. When David fled from Saul, he ran straight to Samuel at Naioth (1 Samuel 19:18-19). Saul sent three successive bands of messengers to capture him — each band ended up prophesying when they encountered the prophets there. Saul himself finally came in person, and the Spirit of God fell on him; he stripped off his clothes and lay prophesying on the ground all day and night, prompting the proverb "Is Saul also among the prophets?" (1 Samuel 19:20-24; 20:1).
