An Amorite stronghold in Dans territory the house of Joseph eventually subdued — later one of Solomons supply district capitals
DanShaalbim ("place of foxes") sat in the western foothills of the Aijalon Valley in the territory allotted to the tribe of Dan. Like nearby Aijalon and Mount Heres, it remained an unconquered Amorite stronghold for generations: "The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor" (Judges 1:35). The town later became one of the centers of Solomon's second administrative district under Ben-Deker, alongside Beth-shemesh and Elon-bethhanan (1 Kings 4:9). One of David's mighty men, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, came from Shaalbim (2 Samuel 23:32, 1 Chronicles 11:33). Generally identified with the modern village of Salbit (Selbit) east of Lod.
