Egypt's southernmost frontier city on the Nile — paired with Migdol in Ezekiel's "end to end" judgment oracles
EgyptHistorically Verified
Modern Aswan in southern Egypt. The 5th-century Elephantine Papyri were discovered on an island opposite the city — documenting a Jewish military colony with its own temple. The granite quarries here supplied Egypt's monuments.
Egypt's southernmost frontier city on the Nile at the first cataract — the boundary of pharaonic Egypt facing Nubia and Cush. Ezekiel twice used the phrase "from Migdol to Syene" to mean from end to end of Egypt, prophesying total desolation across the entire land (Ezekiel 29:10; 30:6). The city became a Jewish military colony during the Persian period, and the famous Elephantine Papyri were discovered on an island in the river opposite the town.
