The — from the Greek euangelion, meaning "good news" — is the announcement that of Nazareth died for human sin, rose bodily from the dead, and is now making all things new. It is not a self-improvement program, a moral code, or a religion. It is a news report: something happened in history, and it changes everything.
One Sentence That Carries Everything {v:1 Corinthians 15:3-4}
Paul gave one of the most compact definitions in all of Scripture when writing to the church in Corinth:
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
Four movements: death, burial, resurrection, fulfillment of prophecy. Everything else in Christian theology unpacks from this core. The Gospel is not background information — Paul calls it "of first importance," the load-bearing center of the entire faith.
Why "Good News" Needs Bad News First {v:Romans 3:23}
The announcement only registers as good if you understand what it's rescuing you from. Scripture diagnoses the problem plainly: every person has sinned and fallen short of what they were made to be. The consequence is not simply guilt feelings — it is broken relationship with God, the source of all life and flourishing.
This is where the Gospel does something no other religious framework does: it doesn't ask you to fix the problem yourself. It announces that someone else already did.
The Substitution at the Center {v:Isaiah 53:5-6}
Jesus did not die as a martyr or a moral example, though his life certainly modeled perfect humanity. He died as a substitute — bearing the weight of human wrongdoing so that those who trust him receive the verdict "not guilty" in its place. Theologians call this Salvation through substitutionary atonement, and while Christians have debated its precise mechanics for centuries, the core claim is consistent across the New Testament: his death accomplishes something for us that we could not accomplish for ourselves.
The resurrection is not an afterthought. It is the vindication — God's confirmation that the sacrifice was accepted, that death itself has been defeated, and that the future belongs to life, not decay.
More Than Forgiveness: The Kingdom Has Arrived {v:Mark 1:14-15}
One thing easily missed in shorthand summaries: the Gospel is not only about individual forgiveness. Jesus himself announced it in terms of the Kingdom of God arriving. The reign of God — justice, healing, restoration, the world set right — broke into history through him. Forgiveness is the door, but the room beyond it is cosmic renewal.
This is why the New Testament writers could not keep the Gospel contained to personal piety. Paul's letter to the church in Rome stretches from personal Salvation all the way to the redemption of creation itself. The Good News is not merely that individuals can go to heaven — it is that heaven is coming here, and Jesus is the firstfruits of that new creation.
Does Everyone Have to Agree on Every Detail?
Genuine evangelical disagreement exists on the edges: the precise mechanics of atonement, the relationship between Gospel and social transformation, how the announcement applies to those who never heard it. These are real questions worth engaging honestly.
But the center holds across traditions. Whatever the theological tribe — Reformed, Arminian, Catholic, Orthodox — the core announcement is the same: Jesus died, Jesus rose, and those realities change a person's standing before God and their orientation toward the world.
Why It Matters to Be Precise
The reason Christians get asked "but what do you mean?" when they say "gospel" is that the word has sometimes drifted to mean anything from "be kind to people" to a list of rules to a political agenda. None of those are the Gospel, though the Gospel has implications for all of them.
The Good News is specific: a person, a cross, an empty tomb, and an open invitation. That specificity is not a narrowness to be ashamed of — it is what makes it an announcement rather than a vague aspiration. It happened. And the claim is that it happened for you.
