In the ancient world, a name wasn't simply a way to tell people apart — it was a declaration of who you were, where you came from, and what you were made for. The Bible takes names with profound seriousness, because for Israel and the early church, naming was an act of meaning-making. To know something's name was to know its nature. To change a name was to change a destiny.
Names as Identity, Not Just Labels
Modern Western culture tends to treat names as arbitrary — we name children after grandparents or because something sounds nice. But in the ancient Near East, a name carried the weight of the whole person. Parents named children prophetically, commemorating circumstances of birth or expressing hope for a future. When Hannah named her son Samuel ("heard by God"), she was embedding her entire prayer story into his identity. He would walk through life carrying testimony in his name.
This is why genealogies in Scripture — which can feel tedious to modern readers — were anything but boring to their original audience. A list of names was a list of stories, a chain of meaning connecting generation to generation.
When God Changes a Name {v:Genesis 17:5}
The most dramatic name moments in Scripture are the divine renames. When God established his Covenant with Abram, he changed the name to Abraham — "father of many nations" — even though Abraham and Sarai had no children yet. The name wasn't a description of current reality. It was a word of faith spoken over a future that only God could see.
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
The rename was the promise. To speak the new name was to participate in the covenant.
The same pattern holds with Jacob. After his night of wrestling at the Jabbok — one of the most enigmatic scenes in the Old Testament — the stranger gives him a new name: Israel, "he who strives with God." Jacob had spent his life grabbing, scheming, outrunning his past. Now he walks away with a limp and a name that tells the truth about who he has become: someone who has met God face to face and survived. An entire nation would carry that name forward.
The Name Jesus Carries {v:Matthew 1:21}
When the angel instructs Joseph to name the child Jesus, the instruction comes with an explanation: "for he will save his people from their sins." The name Yeshua in Hebrew means "the Lord saves" — it was a common enough name in first-century Judea, but Jesus lived into it completely. His name was a job description.
The New Testament writers were deeply aware of this. Acts 4:12 declares that "there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." The name isn't a password — it's a shorthand for the entire person, the complete work, the full identity of Jesus of Nazareth.
Simon Becomes Peter {v:Matthew 16:17-18}
When Jesus renames Simon as Peter — petra, rock — it's a moment that echoes the Abraham rename. Simon by nature was impulsive, prone to both great declarations and spectacular failures. Yet Jesus speaks a name over him that points beyond his present self. This is what he is being made into.
There is genuine discussion among theologians about what exactly Jesus meant by "on this rock I will build my church" — whether the rock refers to Peter personally, to his confession, or to the pattern of Spirit-revealed faith. But the name-change itself is clear: Jesus sees people not only as they are but as they are being shaped to become.
The Name That Cannot Be Spoken {v:Exodus 3:14}
Even the name of God carries this weight. When Moses asks for God's name at the burning bush, the answer he receives — I AM — is less a name than a statement of being. The Hebrew YHWH (often rendered LORD in English Bibles) is so sacred that Jewish tradition developed a practice of not pronouncing it at all, substituting Adonai ("Lord") in its place. The name pointed to something beyond human categories: pure existence, the ground of all being, the one who simply is.
To invoke God's name was to call on the whole of who God is. It was never casual. It was always weight-bearing.
What This Means for Us
The biblical theology of names doesn't stay in the ancient world. The New Testament closes with a promise that those who overcome will receive "a new name" — one known only to the one who receives it (Revelation 2:17). Identity, in the biblical imagination, is not fixed at birth. It is received, revealed, and ultimately given by the one who made us.
Names in Scripture are prophecies. They are promises. They are the shorthand for entire lives. When you learn to read them that way, the genealogies stop being speed bumps and start being windows.
