1 John 3 — The chapter where your identity and your love both get audited

opened with something he clearly couldn't get over. You can almost hear him shaking his head in amazement as he wrote it:
"Look at the kind of love the Father has given us — that we would actually be called children of God. And that's not just a title. We really are.
The reason the world doesn't recognize us is the same reason it didn't recognize him.
We are God's children right now. What we're going to become hasn't fully shown up yet. But we know this: when Jesus appears, we'll be like him — because we'll finally see him as he truly is. And everyone who holds on to that hope purifies themselves, because he is pure."
Think about what John just said. Not "you might become" children of . Not "you're working toward it." You ARE. Right now. The world won't get it — it never got either. But the thing you're becoming hasn't even been revealed yet. You're mid-transformation. What you see in the mirror right now is not the finished product. And the of what's coming — actually seeing Jesus face to face — is supposed to change how you live today.
This next section is one of the most misunderstood passages in the New Testament. drew a line that feels impossibly sharp — and it's important to understand what he was actually saying:
"Everyone who keeps on sinning is practicing lawlessness — because Sin IS lawlessness. And you know why Jesus appeared: to take away sins. There is no sin in him. No one who stays connected to him keeps on sinning as a way of life. No one whose life is defined by ongoing sin has truly seen him or known him.
Don't let anyone fool you on this. The person who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Jesus is righteous. The person who makes a practice of sinning belongs to the devil — because the devil has been sinning since the very beginning.
Here's why the Son of God appeared: to destroy everything the devil has built. No one born of God makes sin their pattern of life, because God's seed lives in them. They can't keep living that way — because they've been born of God.
This is how you can tell the difference between the children of God and the children of the devil: whoever doesn't practice righteousness isn't from God — and neither is anyone who doesn't love their brother or sister."
Here's the key: John wasn't saying Christians never . He said that in chapter 1. What he's talking about here is the PATTERN. The trajectory. The direction of your . Everyone trips and sometimes. But there's a difference between someone who trips on the trail and someone who's walking in the opposite direction entirely. John is asking: what's the overall direction? Because that reveals whose you belong to.
circled back to the message that had been there from the very start — and then used the darkest possible example to make his point:
"This is the message you've heard since the beginning: love each other.
Don't be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain's own actions were evil, and his brother's were righteous.
Don't be surprised when the world hates you. We know we've crossed over from death to life — because we love each other. Whoever doesn't love is still sitting in death. Everyone who hates their brother or sister is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has Eternal Life living inside them."
John didn't soften it. He went all the way back to the first in . didn't kill because Abel did something wrong. He killed him because Abel's exposed Cain's wickedness. That dynamic hasn't changed. Goodness makes uncomfortable. When the world pushes back on you for following , don't be shocked — it's the same pattern it's always been. But the flip side is just as clear: the evidence that you've moved from to isn't a theological quiz or a attendance record. It's whether you the people around you.
Now moved from the theory to the practice — in three verses that leave nowhere to hide:
"This is how we know what love actually is: Jesus laid down his life for us. And we should be willing to lay down our lives for each other.
But here's the thing — if you have what you need and you see a brother or sister who doesn't, and you just... close your heart to them? How is God's love living in you?
Let's not love with words or speeches. Let's love with what we do — and let it be real."
John started with the ultimate definition of — dying for us — and then immediately brought it down to Tuesday afternoon. He didn't say "be willing to die for someone." He said: you see someone who needs something, and you have the resources to help. What do you do? Love that stays in your mouth never reaches anyone. John said: stop talking about love and start doing it.
ended the chapter with something deeply pastoral. He knew that everything he'd just said — the high bar, the sharp lines, the call to active — might leave some readers feeling crushed. So he spoke directly to the doubt:
"This is how we'll know we belong to the truth, and how we'll quiet our hearts when we stand before God. Because even when our own heart condemns us — God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
If our heart doesn't condemn us, we can approach God with confidence. And whatever we ask, we receive from him — because we keep his commandments and do what brings him joy.
And this is his commandment: believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he told us to. Whoever keeps his commandments lives in God, and God lives in them. And this is how we know he's with us — by the Holy Spirit he's given us."
Read that middle part again. "When your heart condemns you — is greater than your heart." That might be the most comforting sentence in the entire letter. If you're the kind of person who reads a chapter like this and immediately starts cataloging every way you've fallen short — John saw you coming. Your guilt is real, but it's not the final word. sees the full picture. He knows everything — not just your failures, but your . Not just your stumbles, but the direction you're walking. And the commandment, when you boil it all down, is beautifully simple: and love each other. Everything else flows from there.
