1 John 4 — Testing what's real, and the love that rewrites fear

has been building toward this. His letter to the early has been circling around a tension they were living in every day — people claiming to speak for God, teachers pulling the community in different directions, and the constant question underneath it all: how do we know what's real? Who do we actually trust?
In this chapter, John lands two things that tie everything together. First, a filter for truth from noise. And second, one of the most breathtaking theological statements in all of — and what it demands of anyone who believes it.
John opened with a warning that's almost more relevant now than when he wrote it. There's no shortage of people claiming to speak with spiritual authority. John said: don't just take their word for it.
"Dear friends, don't believe every spirit you encounter. Test them. See whether they're actually from God — because there are plenty of false out in the world right now.
Here's how you recognize the : every spirit that acknowledges that Christ came in an actual human body — that one is from God. And every spirit that won't acknowledge Jesus? That's not from God. That's the spirit of the — the one you were warned about. It's already here, already at work.
But listen — you belong to God, and you have already overcome them. Because the one living in you is greater than the one operating in the world. These false teachers? They speak the world's language, which is exactly why the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever truly knows God listens to us. Whoever isn't from God doesn't. That's how you tell the Spirit of truth from the spirit of deception."
The test John gave wasn't complicated: Does this person, this teaching, this voice — does it point to as the real, flesh-and-blood ? Or does it subtly rework him into something more comfortable, more abstract, more manageable? That was the issue then. Teachers were showing up claiming Jesus wasn't really human — that God couldn't possibly have taken on actual flesh. John said that's not a minor theological disagreement. That's a different entirely.
And here's what's worth noticing: the loudest voices aren't always the truest ones. John said the world listens to false teachers precisely because they speak the world's language — they say what people already want to hear. The real test isn't popularity. It's whether they point you to the real Jesus or a version that's been edited for comfort.
Then John shifted — and the temperature in the letter changed completely. He moved from discernment to the deepest thing he knew:
"Dear friends, let's love one another. Because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who doesn't love doesn't know God — because God is love.
And here's how God's love was made real among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world so that we could live through him. This is what love actually looks like — not that we loved God first, but that he loved us and sent his Son as the that made things right between us and God.
Dear friends, if God loved us that much, we are absolutely called to love one another. No one has ever seen God. But when we love each other, God lives in us — and his love reaches its full expression through us."
Two words: God is love. Not "God is loving" — like it's one of his qualities alongside many others. God IS love. It's not something he does occasionally. It's who he is at the core. Everything else flows from that.
And then John did something stunning with the direction of love. He said the real story isn't that we figured out how to love God. It's that God loved us first — and demonstrated it by sending into the mess. That completely rewrites the equation. You don't earn your way into this. You respond to something that already happened.
Then the practical turn: no one has ever seen God. So where do people encounter him? Through the way his people love each other. That's an enormous claim. It means every act of genuine love between believers is making the invisible God visible.
John kept building. He'd been talking about love, and now he circled back to assurance — how do you know this is real? How do you know you're actually connected to God and not just going through the motions?
"Here's how we know we're living in him and he's living in us: he has given us his . And we have seen it firsthand — we testify that sent his Son to be the of the world.
Whoever acknowledges that is the — God lives in that person, and that person lives in God. We have come to know and to trust the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God lives in them."
John said it again: God is love. He wasn't repeating himself because he ran out of material. He was driving it deeper. The isn't just a theological concept — it's the actual presence of God living in you, confirming that this whole thing is real. And the evidence isn't a feeling or a formula. It's a life marked by love.
Think about what John was describing. Not a religion where you perform your way into God's good . Not a system where you check enough boxes to qualify. A relationship where God's own Spirit lives inside you, and the proof that it's real is that you're becoming a more loving person. That's the test. Not knowledge. Not experiences. Love.
John closed the chapter by connecting love to the thing that quietly controls more people than almost anything else: fear.
"This is how love is brought to its full expression in us — so that we can stand with confidence on the day of . Because as Jesus is, so are we in this world.
There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives fear out completely. Fear has to do with punishment — and anyone still living in fear hasn't yet experienced the fullness of God's love.
We love because he loved us first.
If someone says, 'I love God,' but hates a brother or sister — that person is a liar. Because if you can't love someone you can actually see, you definitely can't love a God you can't see. And this is the command he gave us: whoever loves God must also love their brother and sister."
Let that line sit for a moment: perfect love casts out fear. Not manages it. Not reduces it. Casts it out. Fear and love can't occupy the same space. And John wasn't talking about healthy caution — he was talking about the deep, paralyzing kind of fear. The fear that God is angry. The fear that you're not enough. The fear that day is a trap. John said when you really grasp how much God loves you, that fear loses its grip.
And then the final gut-check. You can't claim to love God while treating the person in front of you like they don't matter. John didn't leave room for the "spiritual but not relational" version of . Love for God and love for people aren't two separate categories. They're the same thing expressed in two directions. If one is missing, the other isn't real either.
That's the whole chapter. Test what you hear. Trust the love of God. Let that love push out your fear. And then turn around and give it away to the person standing next to you. Simple to say. A lifetime to live.
