For a long time Israel went without the true God. No faithful Priest to teach them. No Law to guide them. But when they hit bottom and turned back to the Lord, the God of Israel — and genuinely looked for him — he was there. He let himself be found.
In those days there was no safety anywhere. Everyone who went out, everyone who came in — chaos. Nation crushed nation. City destroyed city. God himself was shaking everything with distress.
But you — take courage. Don't let your hands go weak. Your work will be rewarded."

They had searched for God with everything they had — and he was found by them. And the Lord gave them rest on every side.

But simple doesn't mean easy. "Whole heart" is the part that costs something. It means no backup plans. No keeping one foot in the old life just in case.
