After complicated ending, the throne of passed to his son . And what happens next is one of those stretches in the Old Testament that makes you stop and think — because Jehoshaphat didn't just inherit a . He built one. Not by conquest or brute force, but by doing the thing almost none of his predecessors could sustain: staying faithful and leading others to do the same.
This is a chapter about what happens when a leader actually gets it right. Not perfectly — Jehoshaphat had his blind spots, and they'd show up later. But in these early years? He was the real deal. And the results speak for themselves.

Jehoshaphat took the throne after his father and fortified his position against Israel. He stationed troops in every fortified city across Judah and placed garrisons throughout the land, including the cities in Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.
The Lord was with Jehoshaphat — because he walked in the earlier ways of his ancestor David. He didn't chase after the Baals. He sought the God of his father and followed his commands, refusing to copy the practices of Israel.
Because of this, the Lord established the kingdom firmly in his hands. All of Judah brought him tribute. He had great wealth and great honor. And his heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. He went further — tearing down the high places and the Asherah poles throughout Judah.
Here's what's easy to miss. The text says he walked in the "earlier ways" of . Not the later David — the David who fell hard with and struggled with his family. The earlier David. The one whose heart was fully locked in. Jehoshaphat looked at history, identified the best version of he could find, and said: that's my model.
And then — this is the part that separates him — he didn't just avoid the bad stuff. He actively removed it. The and poles were deeply embedded in the culture. Taking them out wasn't a quiet policy change. It was public, expensive, and guaranteed to make some people furious. He did it anyway.
Now here's where did something genuinely ahead of his time. Three years into his reign, he launched what might be the first organized teaching initiative in history:
In the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat sent his officials — Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah — to teach in the cities of Judah. With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah. And with these Levites, the Priests Elishama and Jehoram.
They taught throughout Judah, carrying the Book of The Law of the Lord with them. They traveled through every city and taught the people.
Think about what he just did. He didn't just tear down the and everyone figured out what to believe instead. He organized a team — government officials, , and working together — gave them copies of , and sent them city by city across the entire nation. He wasn't just removing what was wrong. He was replacing it with what was right.
That's a leadership principle that still applies. Tearing things down without building something in their place just leaves a vacuum. Jehoshaphat understood that the only way to keep his country from drifting back was to make sure people actually knew what God had said. Not secondhand. Not summarized. The actual text, taught face to face, in their own towns. He invested in formation, not just reformation.
And then something remarkable happened — not because orchestrated it, but because God did:
The Fear of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms surrounding Judah. Nobody made war against Jehoshaphat. Some of the Philistines brought him gifts and silver as tribute. The Arabians brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats.
Read that again. The — historically one of most persistent enemies — voluntarily showed up with presents. The Arabians brought nearly sixteen thousand animals. These weren't allies. These were neighbors who suddenly wanted to stay on Jehoshaphat's good side. Not because his army was terrifying, but because something about this made the nations around it uneasy in a way they couldn't quite explain.
Here's the connection: Jehoshaphat didn't achieve by projecting power. He achieved it by being faithful. God handled the . There's something almost counterintuitive about that — the king who focused on teaching the Bible ended up with a stronger national defense than the kings who focused on building armies. Sometimes the most strategic thing you can do isn't strategic at all. It's .

Jehoshaphat grew steadily greater. He built fortresses and supply cities throughout Judah. He stockpiled resources across the land and maintained a powerful standing army in Jerusalem.

From the tribe of Judah: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 warriors. Next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000. Then Amasiah son of Zichri — a volunteer for the service of the Lord — with 200,000 warriors.
From the tribe of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty warrior, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields. And beside him, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men equipped for battle.
These served the king directly — on top of the soldiers Jehoshaphat had already stationed in fortified cities across the nation.
That's over 1.1 million soldiers in alone, not counting the garrisons scattered across the country. The numbers are staggering. But here's the detail worth pausing on: Amasiah is described as "a volunteer for the service of the Lord." Not conscripted. Not doing it for the paycheck. A man who chose to serve because he believed in the mission. When a leader is faithful, it inspires people to give more than what's required.
