What happens next is a case study in what one person can destroy when they have power and no character. Everything his father built, Jehoram dismantled. Every relationship his father honored, Jehoram betrayed. And the ending is one of the bleakest lines in all of .
This isn't a chapter with a neat moral at the end. It's a warning — and a strangely honest portrait of what happens when legacy meets corruption.
had been thoughtful about his estate. He didn't just hand everything to his oldest son and forget about the . He gave each of his sons generous gifts — silver, gold, valuable property — and even fortified cities throughout . The went to because he was the , but nobody was left with nothing.
Jehoshaphat died and was buried with his ancestors in the city of David. Jehoram, his son, became king. He had six brothers — Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah — all sons of Jehoshaphat. Their father had given them generous gifts of silver, gold, and valuable property, along with fortified cities in Judah. But the kingdom itself went to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.
Once Jehoram was established on the throne, he killed every single one of his brothers with the sword — and some of the leading officials along with them.
Let that settle for a moment. His father had gone out of his way to make sure the brothers were taken care of. There was no power struggle. No rebellion. No threat. Jehoram killed them anyway — not because they were dangerous, but because they existed. This wasn't self-defense. It was extermination. And it tells you everything you need to know about the kind of king he was going to be.
The text gives us the reason behind the madness in a single devastating sentence: married into the family of .
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab's family had done — because Ahab's daughter was his wife. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.
Yet the Lord refused to destroy the house of David — because of the Covenant he had made with David, and because he had promised to keep a lamp burning for David and his descendants forever.
Here's where the chapter gets complicated — and deeply important. Jehoram was terrible. Full stop. But God didn't wipe out line because of one man's failure. The held. Not because Jehoram deserved it. Because God made a , and God keeps his promises even when the people on the other end don't deserve them.
That single verse is one of the clearest pictures of in the Old Testament. The lamp stayed lit — not because the king was good, but because the God who promised was .
When a king turns away from God, the consequences don't stay private. They ripple outward — politically, militarily, spiritually. Under , started losing territory it had held for generations.
During Jehoram's reign, Edom revolted against Judah's control and set up their own king. Jehoram marched out with his commanders and all his chariots, launching a surprise night attack against the Edomites who had surrounded him. He struck them — but it didn't matter. Edom broke free from Judah's rule permanently.
At the same time, Libnah also revolted — because Jehoram had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
On top of all this, he built high places throughout the hill country of Judah, led the people of Jerusalem into spiritual unfaithfulness, and dragged all of Judah away from God.
Notice the cause and effect. The text doesn't just say "territories rebelled." It tells you why: because Jehoram had forsaken God. His spiritual failures weren't separate from his political failures — they were the root of them. Nations that had been under authority for generations suddenly sensed weakness, because there was weakness. When a leader abandons the source of their strength, everything downstream starts breaking.
This is one of the most unusual moments in all of Kings and Chronicles. A letter arrived — from the Prophet. And it wasn't a gentle nudge. It was a detailed indictment.
Elijah the Prophet sent Jehoram a letter that said:
"This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: You haven't followed the ways of your father Jehoshaphat. You haven't followed the ways of King Asa before him. Instead, you've walked the same road as the kings of Israel. You've dragged Judah and Jerusalem into the same spiritual corruption that Ahab's family brought on Israel. And you murdered your own brothers — your father's sons — who were better men than you.
Because of this, the Lord is going to bring a devastating plague on your people, your children, your wives, and everything you own. And you — you will suffer a severe illness, a disease in your intestines, until your insides come out from the disease, day after day."
There's no diplomatic language here. No "consider this a warning." Elijah laid out exactly what had done and exactly what was coming. And that line — "your brothers, who were better than you" — is devastating. God saw the men Jehoram murdered. He knew their character. And he wanted Jehoram to know that too.
Every word of letter started coming true. And it happened fast.
The Lord stirred up the Philistines and the Arabians who lived near the Ethiopians against Jehoram. They invaded Judah, broke through, and carried away everything they found in the king's palace — along with his sons and his wives. The only son left to him was Jehoahaz, his youngest.
Think about what just happened. had murdered his brothers to secure his dynasty. Now his own sons were taken from him — all but the youngest. He had tried to eliminate every threat to his power, and in the end, his power was stripped down to almost nothing. The very thing he killed to protect was the very thing he lost.
This is where the chapter gets quiet. There's no more action. No more military campaigns. Just a man, a disease, and an ending that nobody mourned.
After all this, the Lord struck Jehoram with an incurable disease in his intestines. Over the course of two years, his insides came out because of the disease, and he died in terrible agony.
His people did not make a fire in his honor, the way they had for his ancestors. He was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. He departed with no one's regret. They buried him in the city of David — but not in the tombs of the kings.
Read that last line again. "He departed with no one's regret." In a culture that honored even mediocre kings with ceremony and respect, got nothing. No memorial . No royal tomb. The people buried him — but they made sure everyone knew he wasn't counted among the real kings of .
Eight years on the throne. Murdered his brothers. Lost his sons. Lost his health. Lost his legacy. And the final verdict: nobody missed him. That's what happens when you spend your whole life grasping for power and never once ask what the power is for. You can sit on a throne and still be completely alone at the end. The saddest part isn't that he was forgotten. It's that he gave everyone every reason to forget him.
