Elijah the Prophet sent Jehoram a letter that said:

"This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: You haven't followed the ways of your father Jehoshaphat. You haven't followed the ways of King Asa before him. Instead, you've walked the same road as the kings of Israel. You've dragged Judah and Jerusalem into the same spiritual corruption that Ahab's family brought on Israel. And you murdered your own brothers — your father's sons — who were better men than you.

Because of this, the Lord is going to bring a devastating plague on your people, your children, your wives, and everything you own. And you — you will suffer a severe illness, a disease in your intestines, until your insides come out from the disease, day after day."

There's no diplomatic language here. No "consider this a warning." Elijah laid out exactly what had done and exactly what was coming. And that line — "your brothers, who were better than you" — is devastating. God saw the men Jehoram murdered. He knew their character. And he wanted Jehoram to know that too.

The Invasion 🔥

Every word of letter started coming true. And it happened fast.

The Lord stirred up the Philistines and the Arabians who lived near the Ethiopians against Jehoram. They invaded Judah, broke through, and carried away everything they found in the king's palace — along with his sons and his wives. The only son left to him was Jehoahaz, his youngest.

Think about what just happened. had murdered his brothers to secure his dynasty. Now his own sons were taken from him — all but the youngest. He had tried to eliminate every threat to his power, and in the end, his power was stripped down to almost nothing. The very thing he killed to protect was the very thing he lost.

After all this, the Lord struck Jehoram with an incurable disease in his intestines. Over the course of two years, his insides came out because of the disease, and he died in terrible agony.

His people did not make a fire in his honor, the way they had for his ancestors. He was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. He departed with no one's regret. They buried him in the city of David — but not in the tombs of the kings.
