Paul describes anger as something you choose to remove. Does anger feel like a choice to you?
What would it look like to choose compassion the next time anger surfaces?
opened with a logical consequence — not a hypothetical:
"If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above — not on things that are on earth. Because here's the reality: you have died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ — who IS your life — appears, then you will appear with him in glory."
"Your life is hidden with in ." Your deepest identity isn't your career or relationship status — it's tucked away in and hasn't fully been revealed yet. Paul isn't saying "ignore real life." He's saying stop letting temporary things set your compass. Your real is anchored somewhere else entirely.
didn't say "be better." He named names — not "manage," but put to :
"Put to death what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, uncontrolled passion, evil desires, and greed — which is really just another form of idolatry. God's judgment is coming because of these things. You used to live in all of that. That was your old life.
But now? Put it all away. Every bit of it. Anger, rage, cruelty, slander, filthy language — get rid of it. Don't lie to each other. You've taken off the old self and everything that came with it. You've put on the new self — which is being renewed, reshaped into the image of the one who created you.
And in this new reality, the old labels don't apply anymore. There is no Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, outsider, foreigner, slave, free. Christ is all, and in all."
Two lists side by side. The first — sexual immorality, impurity, — is what you hide. The second — anger, slander, cruelty, lying — leaks out in how you treat people. Paul wants both gone. Put to death. The language of a surgeon, not a life coach.
And that final line levels every hierarchy the ancient world cared about. In , those walls come down — not because differences vanish, but because they no longer determine who's in and who's out.
told them what to wear instead — and this isn't about earning your way in. It flows from what's already true:
"As God's chosen ones — holy and deeply loved — put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another. If someone has a grievance against someone else, forgive — just as the Lord forgave you. That's the standard.
And over everything else, put on love. Love is what holds it all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ be the deciding voice in your hearts. You were called to that peace as one body. Be thankful. Let the word of Christ live in you richly — teach one another, encourage one another with wisdom, sing together with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do — whether it's something you say or something you do — do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Paul called them "chosen, , and beloved" before telling them to do a single thing. Identity first. You don't put on compassion to become loved by — you put it on because you already are.
That list — compassion, kindness, , gentleness, patience — sounds soft. Every one requires enormous strength. when the wound is still fresh. This is what strength looks like when is running through it. The word "rule" for ? That's an umpire's call — when two impulses compete, let peace decide.
turned to households — words quoted in healthy ways and weaponized in unhealthy ones:
"Wives, defer to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Children, obey your parents in everything, because this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, or they will become discouraged."
Every instruction goes both ways. Wives, defer — but husbands, no license for harshness. Children, obey — but , don't crush their . In a culture where the head of household had nearly absolute , Paul put limits on power. The person with more gets the harder command: , not harshness. Leadership, not provocation.
closed by speaking to workers — in his context, servants and enslaved people:
"Whatever your work situation, give your full effort — not just when someone's watching, not just to make a good impression, but with sincerity, out of reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it wholeheartedly, as though you're working for the Lord and not just for people. Because you know this: it's from the Lord that you'll receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
And the person who does wrong will be repaid for what they've done. There is no favoritism."
This reframes every thankless task. Your work has an audience of one — and that audience sees everything. The effort nobody notices isn't wasted, because the one you're ultimately working for never misses a thing.
That last line cuts both ways: is impartial. doesn't play favorites. Top of the org chart or bottom, the same standard applies.
