Deuteronomy 11 — Two mountains, one choice, and no middle ground

His argument is simple: you saw what God did. You were there. Now him, obey him, and watch what happens next. Or don't — and lose everything. No middle ground. No "mostly committed." Just a choice.
started with the strongest argument he had — eyewitness testimony. He wasn't appealing to secondhand stories or ancient traditions. He was talking to people who had personally watched God move:
"Love the Lord your God. Keep his requirements, his laws, his rules, and his commands — always.
I want you to think about this today — and I'm not talking to your children who didn't see it or experience it. I'm talking to you. Think about the discipline of the Lord your God. His greatness. His mighty hand and outstretched arm. The signs and wonders he did in Egypt to Pharaoh and his entire land. What he did to Egypt's army — their horses and chariots — when the Red Sea came rushing back over them as they chased you. The Lord wiped them out completely. What he did for you in the wilderness, all the way to this place. What he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab from the tribe of Reuben — how the earth literally opened its mouth and swallowed them, their families, their tents, and every living thing that belonged to them, right in front of all Israel.
Your own eyes have seen every great thing the Lord has done."
That last line is the whole point. Moses wasn't asking them to take his word for it. He was saying: you have the receipts. You watched the sea split. You saw the ground open up under allies. You ate that showed up every morning for forty years. When God tells you to trust him, it's not a blind ask — it's based on a track record you personally witnessed. The same principle holds today. When you feel like you can't trust God with what's ahead, look back at what he's already done.
Then shifted from the past to the future. He described what was waiting for them across the — and why it would require a different kind of :
"So keep every commandment I'm giving you today. That way you'll be strong enough to go in and take the land you're crossing over to possess — and so you'll live long in the land the Lord promised to your ancestors and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.
The land you're entering is not like Egypt, where you came from. In Egypt, you planted your seed and irrigated it by hand, like a vegetable garden. But the land you're crossing into is a land of hills and valleys. It drinks water from the rain that heaven sends.
It's a land the Lord your God personally cares for. His eyes are on it from the first day of the year to the last."
Here's what's fascinating about this comparison. In , they controlled the water supply. They dug irrigation channels. They managed their own resources. The was different — it depended on rain. Which meant it depended on God. Moses was essentially saying: where you're going, you won't be able to sustain yourself independently. You'll need to trust that God will send the rain. That might sound like a downgrade. It's actually an upgrade — from self-sufficiency to a relationship where God is actively involved in providing for you. Every single day.
Now laid out the terms. And he was unflinchingly honest about both sides:
"If you truly obey the commands I'm giving you today — to love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and all your soul — he will send rain for your land in its season. The early rain and the late rain. You'll gather your grain, your wine, your oil. He'll provide grass in your fields for your livestock, and you'll eat and be satisfied."
That was the blessing side. Then the warning:
"But be careful. Don't let your heart be deceived. Don't turn away to serve other gods and bow down to them. Because if you do, the Lord's anger will burn against you. He'll shut the sky — no rain. The land will produce nothing. And you will disappear quickly from the good land the Lord is giving you."
This isn't God being petty. This is the honest reality of how covenant relationships work. If someone gives you everything — their presence, their , their personal attention — and you walk away to chase something else, the relationship breaks. The blessings weren't an automatic reward system. They flowed from a living connection with God. Cut the connection, and the flow stops. We do the same thing today, just with different . Career becomes identity. Comfort becomes the goal. Entertainment fills every gap where God might actually speak. And then we wonder why things feel dry.
didn't just say "remember this." He got specific about how:
"Fix these words of mine in your heart and in your soul. Bind them as a sign on your hand. Wear them as a reminder between your eyes.
Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you're sitting at home and when you're walking along the road. When you go to bed at night and when you get up in the morning. Write them on your doorframes and on your gates.
Do this, and your days — and your children's days — will be multiplied in the land the Lord promised your ancestors, for as long as the heavens are above the earth."
Moses wasn't being abstract here. He was saying: don't compartmentalize your . Don't make it a Sunday thing or a crisis thing. Weave it into the ordinary rhythm of life — morning routines, dinner conversations, walks, bedtime. The moments that seem unremarkable are actually the moments that form people. It's also worth noticing that Moses puts enormous weight on what you teach your kids. Not just in formal settings, but in the fabric of everyday life. Faith that's caught in a thousand small moments is faith that sticks.
Then came a promise that should have stopped them in their tracks:
"If you carefully follow every command I'm giving you — loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him — then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you. You will take the land from nations bigger and stronger than you are.
Every place where you set your foot will be yours. Your territory will stretch from the wilderness to Lebanon, from the river Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea. No one will be able to stand against you. The Lord your God will put the fear and dread of you on every land you walk through, just as he promised."
Think about the scope of that promise. These were former slaves — a generation raised in the desert — and God was telling them they would displace established, fortified nations. Not through military superiority. Through and . The phrase "every place where you set your foot" is remarkable. It's an invitation to move forward. God wasn't going to give them land they never walked on. They had to actually go. The promise was real, but it required action. That's still how it works. God opens doors, but you have to walk through them.
brought the whole chapter — and really the whole sermon — to its climax. No ambiguity. No fine print. Just two options, laid bare:
"Look — I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse.
The blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I'm giving you today.
The curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the path I'm commanding you today to chase after other gods you've never known.
When the Lord your God brings you into the land you're entering to possess, you will announce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. They're across the Jordan, west of the road, toward the setting sun, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, near Gilgal, beside the oak of Moreh.
You are about to cross the Jordan to take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you possess it and settle in it, be careful to follow every statute and rule I'm setting before you today."
Two mountains. Two options. and would literally stand across from each other, and would eventually gather between them to hear the blessings shouted from one side and the curses from the other. It was an incredibly dramatic visual Moses could have designed — your future is right in front of you, and you're standing between two possibilities.
We don't have two mountains. But we face the same choice every day, in a thousand small ways. The relationship you're in. The way you spend your time. What you do when nobody's watching. Every decision is a step toward one mountain or the other. Moses didn't give a third option. There isn't one.
