The Prophet Who Gets It Right — and Still Gets It Wrong 🔍

"If a prophet or a dreamer arises among you and offers you a sign or a wonder — and that sign actually comes true — but then says, 'Let's go follow other gods, gods you've never known, and serve them,' don't listen to a word they say. Because the LORD your God is testing you — to find out whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.

"Follow the LORD your God. Fear him. Keep his commands. Obey his voice. Serve him. Hold fast to him.

"That prophet or dreamer must be put to death — because they preached rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from slavery. They tried to push you off the path God commanded you to walk. Purge the evil from among you."

Here's what's striking: the sign is real. The actually happens. And Moses says — still don't follow them. The question isn't whether someone can do impressive things. The question is where those impressive things are pointing you.

Think about how we evaluate credibility today. Big platforms, viral moments, packed rooms, impressive track records. The default assumption is always: if it's working, God must be in it. Moses says not necessarily. isn't about measuring the power — it's about tracing the direction. A sign that points you away from God isn't a confirmation. It's a test.

When It's Someone You Love 💔

The first scenario was a stranger — a , someone with a public platform. This one is different. And was very specific about who he meant:

"If your brother — your own mother's son — or your son, or your daughter, or the wife you hold close, or a friend who is like your own soul quietly says to you, 'Let's go serve other gods' — gods that neither you nor your ancestors have ever known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the earth to the other — don't give in. Don't listen.

"Don't let your compassion shield them. Don't spare them. Don't cover for them. You must put them to death. Your hand goes first, and then the hand of all the people. Stone them — because they tried to pull you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

"All Israel will hear about it and be afraid. And no one will do anything like this among you again."

Let me be honest — this is one of the hardest passages in the Old Testament. There's no way to soften it without being dishonest about what it says. Moses was addressing a theocratic nation under a specific at a specific moment in history. The severity was the point. Loyalty to God came before every other loyalty. Even family. Even .

We don't live under the Mosaic civil code today. But the principle underneath these words is still uncomfortably real. No one can pull you off course quite like someone you trust. The person who whispers "this doesn't really matter" or "everyone's doing it" doesn't need to be loud — they just need to be close. Moses was saying, in the most extreme terms possible, that no relationship, no matter how dear, outweighs your to God.

When a Whole City Goes Wrong 🏚️

The final scenario is the largest in scale. Not a lone . Not a loved one. An entire community:

"If you hear that in one of the cities the LORD your God is giving you, certain worthless individuals have gone out and led the inhabitants of their city astray, saying, 'Let's go serve other gods' — gods you've never known — then investigate. Search thoroughly. Ask careful questions. And if it turns out to be true, if this abomination really happened, you must put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it completely to destruction — everyone in it, including the livestock.

"Gather all the plunder into the middle of the town square and burn the city and everything in it as a complete burnt offering to the LORD your God. It becomes a permanent ruin. It must never be rebuilt.

"None of the condemned things may remain in your hands — so that the LORD may turn from his fierce anger, show you mercy, have compassion on you, and multiply you, just as he swore to your ancestors. All of this depends on obeying the voice of the LORD your God, keeping all his commands that I'm giving you today, and doing what is right in his sight."

Notice something buried in this passage before the destruction: insisted on an investigation. "Inquire, search, and ask diligently." Even in the harshest , God required evidence — not rumors, not panic, not mob energy. The truth had to be established first.

But the destruction itself — a whole city, burned and never rebuilt. You know how this works in real life. You've seen how quickly an entire group can normalize something that would have been unthinkable a year ago. When the people around you shift, the pressure to shift with them is enormous. Moses knew that if they tried to manage or simply contain it, it would spread. The instruction was total removal.

Here's the part people miss: verse 17 holds a . If stays , God will "turn from the fierceness of his anger and show you and have compassion on you." Even in the middle of the harshest commands Moses ever delivered, mercy is the destination. The severity was never the goal — faithfulness was.
