"If anyone among you becomes poor — in any of your towns, in the land the LORD your God is giving you — do not harden your heart or close your hand against them. Open your hand. Lend them whatever they need, whatever it takes.
And watch out for this — don't let an unworthy thought creep into your heart. Don't look at the calendar and think, 'The seventh year is almost here. If I lend this now, I'll never get it back.' Don't look at your struggling brother with resentment and give him nothing. Because if you do that, he will cry out to the LORD against you, and it will be counted as sin.
Give freely. Give without grudging. Because when you do, the LORD your God will bless everything you put your hand to — every project, every effort, every venture.
The poor will never completely disappear from the land. That's reality. And that's exactly why I'm commanding you: open your hand wide to your brother, to the needy, to the poor around you."
