Ephesians 6 — The command isn't 'attack' — it's 'stand'

A senior demon writes letters to his nephew about how to destroy a human soul. It's satire. It's also terrifyingly accurate.
The prodigal son's father didn't chase him. He let him go, then watched the road every day until he came back.

has spent five chapters building something extraordinary — the sweeping plan of , how rescued people who were spiritually dead, how the displays . Then he shifted to the practical: walk worthy, speak , be filled with the , each other the way his people.
Now he closes the letter — from the dinner table to the workplace to the battlefield — and the final image is one of the most iconic in all of .
had already addressed husbands and wives. Now he turned to parents and children — direct, practical, and surprisingly balanced for the ancient world:
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord — this is the right thing to do. 'Honor your father and mother' — and this is the first commandment that comes with a promise — 'so that things go well for you, and you live a long, full life.'
Fathers, don't provoke your children to anger. Instead, raise them with the kind of guidance and instruction that comes from the Lord."
Two directions. Not one. Children honor their parents — nobody would have blinked at that in the first century. But then Paul turned to the fathers: don't crush them. Don't exasperate them. Raise them — build something, don't tear it down. In a culture where a father's word was basically , this was a real counterweight. without tenderness isn't leadership. It's just power.
This section requires honest context. was writing to a that included both enslaved people and slaveholders — and while he didn't dismantle the institution outright, what he said planted seeds that would eventually uproot it:
"If you're serving under someone's authority, do it with sincerity — not just when they're looking, not just to impress people — but as if you're working for Christ himself. Do God's will from your heart. Serve with genuine goodness, as though you're working for the Lord, not for people. And know this: whatever good you do, you'll receive it back from the Lord — regardless of your position.
And those of you with authority over others? Treat them the same way. Stop the threats. You answer to the same Master they do — and he's in heaven, and he plays no favorites."
Paul didn't just tell the people at the bottom to endure. He told the people at the top that doesn't see their position as superior. Same Master. No partiality. The person with answers to the same as the person without it.
Now made a sharp turn. He'd been talking about households and workplaces. Suddenly he was talking about war:
"Finally — be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the full armor of God so you can stand firm against the strategies of the devil.
Because you're not fighting against flesh and blood. Your real opponents are the rulers, the authorities, the cosmic powers behind the darkness of this world — the spiritual forces of evil operating in unseen places.
So take up the whole armor of God. That way, when the day of evil comes, you'll be able to hold your ground — and after you've done everything, to still be standing."
Your real fight isn't with the person who hurt you — the coworker, the ex, the critic. Paul said there are real spiritual forces with real strategies designed to take you out. If the battle is spiritual, the weapons have to be spiritual too. You need different equipment entirely.
So gave them the equipment list. Every item means something specific:
"Stand your ground. Fasten the belt of truth around your waist. Put on the breastplate of righteousness. Lace up your feet with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In every situation, take up the shield of Faith — and with it, you can extinguish every flaming arrow the evil one sends your way.
Take the helmet of salvation. And take the sword of the Spirit — which is the Word of God."
Almost everything on this list is defensive. Belt. Breastplate. Shoes. Shield. Helmet. The only offensive weapon is the — word. Paul wasn't describing an army charging into battle. He was describing someone holding their position. The repeated word isn't "attack." It's stand.
holds everything together — it's the belt, the thing all the other pieces attach to. protects your core. gives you footing. intercepts the lies, the doubts, the accusations before they reach you. covers your mind — where most battles are won or lost. And the is the one thing you can swing back with.
This isn't a costume. It's survival gear.
didn't stop at the armor. He added the piece that makes everything else work:
"Pray at all times in the Spirit — with every kind of prayer and request. Stay alert. Keep persevering. Pray for all the saints.
And pray for me too — that when I open my mouth, the right words will be given to me. That I'll boldly make known the mystery of the Gospel. I'm an ambassador in chains right now — pray that I'll speak as boldly as I should."
Paul — the man who planted across the Roman Empire and survived shipwrecks — asked for . Not politely. Urgently. "I need words. I need boldness. I'm in chains and I still have a message to deliver."
in the isn't something you add to the armor. It's what activates all of it. Without prayer, is just information. is just a concept. The sits unopened. Prayer is the connection between the equipment and the power source.
closed with something personal and warm:
"I'm sending Tychicus to you — he's a beloved brother and a faithful servant of the Lord. He'll fill you in on everything — how I'm doing, what's happening. I'm sending him specifically so you'll know how we are and so he can encourage your hearts.
Peace to the brothers and sisters. Love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with everyone who loves our Lord Jesus Christ with a love that never fades."
That last line. "A that never fades." After six chapters of the deepest theology Paul ever wrote — the mystery of the , the armor of , the cosmic scope of what accomplished — he ended with grace to everyone whose love for is incorruptible. Not perfect. Not flashy. Just real. And lasting. That's how you stand.
