The person who has nothing left but the coat on their back.

You Broke It, You Own It ⚖️

The first set of dealt with the most basic community problem — someone takes or damages what isn't theirs. And God's answer wasn't primarily about . It was about . God laid out the standard:

"If someone steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, they owe five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. If someone lets their livestock graze in another person's field, or lets their animal loose and it eats from someone else's crops, they make restitution from the best of their own field and vineyard. If a fire gets out of control and burns through stacked grain, standing grain, or an entire field — the person who started it pays for everything."

If someone gives their neighbor an animal to watch and it dies, is injured, or is driven off with no one around to see it, the caretaker takes an oath before the Lord that he didn't touch his neighbor's property. The owner accepts the oath, and no payment is required. But if it was stolen while in his care, he makes restitution. If a wild animal killed it, he brings the remains as evidence and owes nothing.

If someone borrows anything from a neighbor and it's damaged or dies while the owner isn't there, the borrower pays full restitution. If the owner was present, nothing is owed. If it was rented, the rental fee covers the loss."

The People God Takes Personally 💔

"Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner — remember, you were foreigners in Egypt.

Do not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child. If you do — if you mistreat them in any way and they cry out to me — I will hear them. My anger will burn. I will kill you with the sword, and your own wives will become widows and your own children will become fatherless."

If you take your neighbor's cloak as collateral for a loan, return it to them before the sun goes down. It's the only covering they have — it's what they wrap themselves in to sleep. And if they cry out to me, I will hear them, because I am compassionate."

Think about what God is describing. Someone so poor that their coat — the thing they sleep in — is the only collateral they can offer. And God says: give it back by nightfall. Let them sleep warm. He's not banning lending. He's banning exploitation. If someone in your community is desperate enough to need a loan, the last thing you should do is turn their struggle into your revenue stream. That principle hasn't aged a day. Payday lenders, predatory interest rates, profiting off someone's worst moment — God saw all of it coming. And he said: that's not how my people operate. " compassionate" isn't just a description of God. It's the standard for everyone who belongs to him.

You Belong to Someone 🌾

"Do not speak against God, and do not curse a leader among your people.

You are to be set apart for me. Don't eat meat from an animal torn by wild beasts in the field — throw it to the dogs."
