But God wasn't done talking. This time, the message wasn't for . It was for Babylon itself — the empire God had used as His instrument of . What follows is one of the longest verdicts in the entire Bible. And at its center is a truth that should keep every powerful institution up at night: being used by God doesn't mean you're approved by God.

The Word Against Babylon ⚡

"Declare it among the nations. Raise a banner and shout it — don't hide a word of it: Babylon is taken. Bel is humiliated. Merodach is shattered. Her images are disgraced. Her idols are broken.

A nation is rising from the north against her. It will turn her land into a wasteland where no one lives — people and animals alike will flee."

Bel and Merodach were supreme gods — the deities they credited for their military dominance, their wealth, their status as the center of the known world. And God says: those gods are about to be exposed as nothing. The empire that seemed permanent had an expiration date all along.

Lost Sheep, Coming Home 🐑

Right in the middle of this verdict against , God shifts tone — and the tenderness is striking. The Lord declared:

"In those days, the people of Israel and the people of Judah will come together — weeping as they walk — and they will search for the Lord their God. They'll ask the way to Zion with their faces set toward it, saying, 'Come, let us bind ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.'

My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds led them astray, scattering them across the mountains. They wandered from hill to hill until they forgot where home was. Everyone who found them devoured them. And their enemies said, 'We're not guilty — they sinned against the Lord, their true home, the hope of their ancestors.'"

Their warriors don't miss — every arrow finds its mark. The Chaldeans will be stripped clean. Everyone who plunders her will have more than enough.

You celebrated while plundering my people. You frolicked like a calf in a pasture. You pranced like stallions in your victory. But your mother-nation will be utterly humiliated. She will become the least of all nations — a wilderness, a dry wasteland, a desert.

Because of the Lord's anger, no one will live there. It will be total desolation. Everyone who passes by Babylon will be horrified, gasping at her wounds."

There's something haunting about the image of celebrating its conquest of God's people — frolicking, prancing — while the God of those people watches. Every empire has this moment: the peak of confidence right before the collapse. The party before the . And God says: your celebration is temporary. What you built on the backs of my people won't stand.

"Take your positions around Babylon, every one of you who draws a bow. Shoot — spare no arrows — because she has sinned against the Lord.

Raise the battle cry from every side. She's surrendering. Her defenses are crumbling. Her walls are coming down. This is the Lord's vengeance: do to her exactly what she has done to others.

Cut off Babylon's farmers — the one who plants and the one who harvests. Because of the oppressor's sword, everyone will scatter back to their own people, fleeing to their own homeland."

Attack her from every direction. Break open her storehouses. Pile up her wealth like heaps of grain and destroy it — leave nothing. Strike down her warriors. Their day has arrived — the time of their Punishment."

I am against you, O proud one, declares the Lord God of hosts. Your day has come — the day I settle accounts with you. The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will help him up. I will set fire to his cities, and everything around him will burn."

"The people of Israel are oppressed, and Judah with them. Their captors have held them tight and refuse to let them go. But their Redeemer is strong. The Lord of hosts is His name. He will take up their case. He will bring rest to the earth — but unrest to Babylon."

A drought against her rivers — let them dry up. Because this is a land obsessed with images, driven mad by their idols.

Wild animals will inhabit Babylon alongside hyenas. Ostriches will make it their home. No human being will live there ever again — for all generations. Like when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them — no one will settle there. Not a single soul."

Every pillar of power gets named and dismantled. Government. Intelligence. Military. Cavalry. Economy. Even the water supply. And the root cause? . They were, as God puts it, "mad over ." So hear the plan the Lord has formed against Babylon — the purposes He has laid out against the land of the Chaldeans: the weakest among them will be dragged away. Their own people will be appalled at what happens. At the sound of Babylon's capture, the earth itself will tremble. Her cry will echo among the nations."
