I could 'encourage' you with my mouth and offer soothing words — and none of it would ease your pain one bit."

Someone sits across from you and says "everything happens for a reason" or "God must be teaching you something" — and you can feel the gap between their words and your reality. Job isn't saying comfort is bad. He's saying comfort without understanding is just noise. His friends were talking at his pain instead of sitting in it with him.
