But listen to what he actually says next, because some of it lands closer to the truth than anything the other three friends managed.

God Doesn't Look Away 👁️

Here's what Elihu is pushing back on: the idea that God doesn't see. That he's too big, too distant, too occupied to notice what's happening to ordinary people. Elihu says no — God is watching. This is the most direct thing anyone has said to Job in a while. And buried in it is something uncomfortably relevant: the warning about bitterness replacing . When you've been through enough pain, there's a moment where you stop asking God for answers and start building a case against him. You stop grieving and start keeping score. Elihu is saying: don't go there. The bitterness feels justified, but it will consume you faster than the suffering ever could.

Anyone who's ever caught themselves rehearsing their argument against someone — against God, against a situation, against life itself — knows exactly what this feels like. The anger starts as a response. Then it becomes a residence.

There's something humbling about that question. Who is a teacher like him? We're so used to evaluating everything — every experience gets reviewed, every authority gets second-guessed. Elihu asks: have you considered that the one you're questioning might know something you can't see from where you're standing? Not to shut the questions down. But to remind you who you're questioning.

And then — almost out of nowhere — stopped arguing and started pointing. Upward. At the storm:

"God is great — greater than we can know. The number of his years? Beyond searching out.

He draws up the drops of water and distills them into rain from the mist.

The skies pour it down, showering it over the earth in abundance.

Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds? The thunder rolling through his pavilion?

He scatters his lightning across the sky and covers the depths of the sea.

By these he governs the nations. By these he provides food in abundance.

He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.

The thunder announces his arrival. Even the cattle sense that something is coming."

This is where the chapter turns from argument to awe. Elihu stops trying to explain God and just starts describing what God does — and the description is overwhelming. Rain cycles. Cloud formations. Lightning. Thunder. Things we can explain scientifically now but still can't control. Every storm is still a reminder: there are forces at work in this world that don't answer to you.
