So now what? How do you approach a God like that? That's what Leviticus answers. And it starts here, chapter one, verse one, with God himself speaking from inside the tent. Not rules carved into stone and left at the door. A voice. An invitation. He lays his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

Then he slaughters the bull before the Lord. Aaron's sons, the priests, take the blood and throw it against the sides of the altar at the entrance of the tent of meeting. He skins the offering and cuts it into pieces. The sons of Aaron put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. The priests arrange the pieces — the head and the fat — on the wood over the fire. The internal organs and legs are washed with water. And the priest burns all of it on the altar — a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord."

We live in a world that the language of "giving God your all" while carefully protecting the parts we don't actually want to surrender. This offering didn't leave room for that. Next, God described the same but with a different animal — sheep or goats instead of cattle. Smaller, less expensive, but handled with the exact same care. God continued:

"If his offering for a burnt offering is from the flock — from the sheep or goats — he must bring a male without defect. He slaughters it on the north side of the altar before the Lord, and Aaron's sons the priests throw its blood against the sides of the altar. He cuts it into pieces, with its head and fat, and the priest arranges them on the wood over the fire on the altar. The internal organs and legs are washed with water. And the priest offers all of it and burns it on the altar — a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord."

Here's what's worth noticing about the repetition: God didn't abbreviate the instructions just because the animal was smaller. Same process. Same washing. Same arranging on the . "If his offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, he brings turtledoves or pigeons. The priest brings it to the altar, wrings off its head, and burns it on the altar. Its blood is drained out on the side of the altar. He removes the crop with its contents and casts it beside the altar on the east side, in the place for ashes. He tears it open by its wings — but doesn't sever it completely. And the priest burns it on the altar, on the wood over the fire. It is a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord."
