A Warning the Priests Didn't Want to Hear ⚡

"This command is for you, priests. If you refuse to listen — if you won't take it to heart to honor my name — I will send a curse on you. I will curse your blessings. In fact, I've already started, because you haven't taken any of this seriously.

I will cut off your descendants. I will smear the waste from your own sacrifices across your faces, and you will be carried out with the refuse. Then you'll know that I sent this warning — so that my covenant with Levi might stand."

The imagery is deliberately visceral. God is saying: the very you're — the ones you think make you look devoted — I'm going to rub them in your faces. That's not anger for the sake of anger. This wasn't about cultural purity for its own sake. Marrying someone devoted to a foreign god wasn't a minor lifestyle choice — it was a violation that pulled the entire community's off center. "Didn't he make the two of you one, with his Spirit woven into that union? And what was God looking for in that oneness? Children who would know him. So guard your hearts. Don't be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.

The man who divorces his wife — who discards her instead of loving her — covers himself with violence, says the Lord, the God of Israel. Guard your hearts. Do not be faithless."

But there's a difference between asking hard questions and rewriting God's character to make yourself comfortable.
