opened with the line everyone has heard — and almost everyone misquotes. He said:

"Don't judge, and you won't be judged. Because the standard you use on other people? That's the standard that will be used on you. The measurement you apply to everyone else? That's what's coming back your way.

Why are you staring at the speck in your brother's eye when you've got a log in your own? How can you say, 'Here, let me help you with that little thing in your eye' — when there's a plank sticking out of yours?

Hypocrite — take the log out of your own eye first. Then you'll actually be able to see clearly enough to help your brother with the speck in his."

This gets misused constantly. People pull out "don't judge" like it means "never evaluate anything anyone does ever." That's not what Jesus said. Read the end of the passage — he fully expects you to help your brother with the speck. He just says deal with your own stuff first. The issue isn't assessment — it's the person who's quick to diagnose everyone else's problems while ignoring the massive, obvious thing in their own .

Read the Room 🐕

Then said something that surprises people who think he was only about open arms and inclusion:

"Don't give dogs what's sacred. Don't throw your pearls in front of pigs — they'll trample them and then turn on you."

This isn't about looking down on people. It's about . Some need the right context to be received. If someone has zero interest in hearing what you have to share — if they've already decided they're going to mock it — you're not helping anyone by forcing the conversation. Discernment isn't the same thing as . One protects something sacred. The other tears someone else down.

Ask. Seek. Knock. 🚪

This next section is one of the warmest things ever said about . And it's remarkably simple:

"Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened.

Because everyone who asks receives. Everyone who seeks finds. Everyone who knocks — it opens.

Think about it — if your kid asks you for bread, would you hand them a rock? If they ask for a fish, would you give them a snake? Of course not. And if you — imperfect as you are — know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him?"

Here's what he's dismantling: the idea that is reluctant. That prayer is about convincing someone who doesn't really want to help. Jesus compared to a good parent — one who actually wants to give. You don't have to manipulate or earn your way in. You just ask. That doesn't mean every request gets a yes. But the person you're asking genuinely you. That changes how you pray.

The Whole Thing in One Sentence ⚖️

"Whatever you want others to do for you, do that for them. That's the Law and the Prophets."

Centuries of commands, case law, prophetic writings — and Jesus boiled it down to one sentence. Not "don't do anything bad to people" — that's the passive version. Think about the patience you want shown to you, the you want extended, the way you want people to talk about you when you're not in the room — and go be that for someone else.

Two Gates, Two Roads 🚶

Now the sermon starts to narrow. stopped teaching principles and started drawing lines:

"Enter through the narrow gate. The wide gate and the easy road? They lead to destruction — and most people take them. But the narrow gate and the hard road? They lead to . And few find them."

Jesus wasn't being dramatic for effect. He was being honest. The path of least resistance — that's the wide road. And it's crowded. The narrow road costs something. It's less popular. But it leads somewhere the wide road never will.

How to Spot a Fake 🐺

Still closing. Still drawing sharper lines. warned them:

"Watch out for false Prophets. They come to you looking like sheep on the outside, but inside they're wolves.

You'll know them by their fruit. Do you pick grapes from thornbushes? Figs from thistles? No. A healthy tree produces good fruit. A rotten tree produces bad fruit. A healthy tree can't produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree can't produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn't produce good fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire.

So — you'll know them by their fruit."

This is about leaders. Teachers. The people with influence. Jesus said the way to evaluate them isn't their words, their charisma, or how impressive they look on the surface. It's their fruit. Over time. What does their life actually produce? Do the people around them flourish or get used? A polished exterior means nothing. Look at the fruit.

The Scariest Thing Jesus Ever Said 😶

This might be the most sobering passage in the entire sermon. Let it land:

"Not everyone who calls me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

On that day, many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord — didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we cast out Demons in your name? Didn't we do incredible things in your name?'

And I will tell them plainly: 'I never knew you. Get away from me, you who practice lawlessness.'"

Read that again slowly. These aren't outsiders. These are people who used name. Who did religious things — big, impressive, public religious things. . . . And Jesus said, "I never knew you." Not "I forgot you" — never. The activity was real. The relationship wasn't. The question isn't "how much am I doing for ?" The question is "does he actually know me — and do I know him?"

Two Houses, One Storm 🌧️

closed the sermon with a story everyone could picture:

"Anyone who hears what I've said and actually does it is like a wise person who built their house on solid rock. The rain came, the floods rose, the wind hammered it — and it stood. Because the foundation was rock.

But anyone who hears what I've said and doesn't do it? That's a foolish person who built their house on sand. Same rain. Same floods. Same wind. And the house collapsed — completely."

Notice — both houses looked the same before the storm. Both people heard the same sermon. The difference wasn't information — it was what they did with it. The storm didn't care which house looked nicer. That's the whole point of chapter 7. Hearing isn't enough. Agreeing isn't enough. The only foundation that holds is actually living this out.

The Crowd Knew Something Was Different 😮

When finished, the people were stunned. Not politely impressed — astonished. Because he taught like someone with actual — not like their , who were always quoting other authorities.

The Scribes would say, " So-and-so taught this, and Rabbi So-and-so taught that." Jesus just said, "I'm telling you." No footnotes. No appeals to tradition. He spoke like someone who had the right to rewrite the rules — because he did. Three chapters. One sermon. And everything was different now.
