opened with a scenario that sounds surprisingly modern — you've financially committed yourself to someone else's debt. You vouched for them. Put your name on the line. And now you're stuck. Solomon told his son:
"If you've put up security for your neighbor — if you've pledged yourself for a stranger — then you've trapped yourself with your own words. You're caught.
So do this, my son, and save yourself — because you've put yourself in their power. Go immediately. Don't wait. Plead urgently with your neighbor. Don't give your eyes sleep. Don't let your eyelids close.
Get yourself out like a gazelle escaping a hunter — like a bird breaking free from a trap."
The urgency here is almost frantic. Solomon didn't say "think it over" or "weigh your options." He said run. The image is an animal that knows it's about to be caught — and every second of hesitation is a second closer to disaster. Whether it's co-signing a loan, overextending a , or putting your financial future in someone else's hands — get out before the trap closes. Your word matters. But so does about when your word has put you in danger.

"Go watch the ant, you lazy person. Study what she does and learn something.

And then poverty shows up like a robber — and need like an armed man."
Here's what makes this sting: the ant doesn't need accountability. She doesn't need a manager, a mentor, or a morning alarm. She just does the work because the work needs doing. Meanwhile, the lazy person isn't doing anything dramatic — they're not rebelling, not quitting. They're just hitting snooze. One more episode. One more scroll. And the terrifying part is how the consequences arrive — not slowly, not with warning, but suddenly. Like someone kicking in the door.

Notice the body language. This isn't someone who's openly aggressive. It's someone who communicates through sideways glances and coded signals. The kind of person who's always working an angle, always hinting, always creating division while maintaining deniability. You've met this person. They never say the thing directly — but everyone knows exactly what they mean. Solomon's point: that kind of calculated manipulation has an expiration date. And when it comes due, there's no recovering from it.

Read that list slowly. It moves from the top of the body to the bottom — eyes, tongue, hands, heart, feet — like God is doing a full scan. And notice where the list starts and ends. It starts with and ends with division. Those two show up together more often than we'd like to admit. The person who thinks they're above everyone else is usually the same person fracturing the group. Also worth noticing: two of the seven are about lying. God apparently finds dishonesty twice as offensive as we tend to treat it.

"Hold onto your father's instruction. Don't walk away from your mother's teaching.
Tie them to your heart. Wear them around your neck.
When you walk, they'll guide you. When you sleep, they'll watch over you. When you wake up, they'll speak to you.
Because the commandment is a lamp. The teaching is a light. And correction — even the kind that stings — is the path to life."
There's a moment, usually somewhere in your twenties or thirties, where you hear yourself say something your parents said — and you realize they were right. The lessons you rolled your eyes at become the guardrails that keep you on the road. Solomon wasn't being sentimental here. He was being strategic. The teaching your parents gave you is protection. Specifically — and this is where the chapter turns — protection from what comes next.
This is where the chapter gets heavy, and got dead serious. Everything before — the financial traps, the laziness, the scheming — all of it was building to this. He warned his son:
"That teaching will protect you from the immoral woman — from the smooth words of the adulteress.
Don't desire her beauty in your heart. Don't let her capture you with her eyes.
A prostitute will cost you a meal. But a married woman? She hunts down your very life.
Can you carry fire against your chest and not get burned? Can you walk on hot coals and not scorch your feet?
That's what it's like to sleep with another man's wife. No one who does this walks away unpunished."
The metaphor isn't poetic decoration. It's a plain statement of physics. You cannot hold fire to your body and expect your clothes to survive. You cannot walk on burning coals and keep your skin intact. Solomon was saying: this isn't a matter of willpower or discretion or thinking you can manage it. The consequences aren't a risk — they're a certainty. Every person who walks into this thinks they'll be the exception. No one is.

"People understand a thief who steals because he's starving. They don't despise him for it. But even he — if caught — pays back seven times over. It costs him everything he owns.
The man who commits adultery has no sense. He is destroying himself.

Because jealousy turns a husband into fury — and when he gets his chance for revenge, he won't hold back. No amount of money will satisfy him. No gift will make it right."
Here's what Solomon wanted his son to understand: a thief's crime, even when severe, has a price that can be paid. It's recoverable. isn't.
