Psalm 135 — A praise song for the God who acts while everything else sits silent

It walks through what God has done, where his authority reaches, and then holds up everything else people and lets you see the contrast for yourself.

And the argument is devastating. Because by the end, you're not just convinced that God is worth praising — you're wondering why you ever gave your attention to anything else.
The psalm opens with pure invitation — a leader calling the room to attention. And notice who's being addressed: the people already standing in God's house, the ones who've shown up to serve:
The psalmist calls out:
"Praise the Lord! Praise his name — everyone who serves the Lord, give praise! You who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of our God —
Praise the Lord, because he is good. Sing to his name — it's a beautiful thing to do.
Because the Lord chose Jacob for himself. He claimed Israel as his very own."
That last line is the foundation everything else builds on. Before any , before any historical victory — there's the choice. God looked at a specific group of people and said "you're mine." Not because they earned it. Not because they were the biggest or the most impressive. He just chose them. And that choice is the reason for everything that follows.
Now the psalmist gets personal. This isn't secondhand theology — it's firsthand conviction:
"I know that the Lord is great. Our Lord is above every other god.
Whatever the Lord wants to do, he does — in heaven, on earth, in the seas and in every depth.
He pulls the clouds up from the edge of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain. He brings the wind out of his storehouses."
Read that middle line again. "Whatever the Lord wants to do, he does." There's no committee. No approval process. No waiting for conditions to be right. He decides, and it happens. The clouds, the lightning, the wind — these aren't random weather patterns. They're dispatched. That's a level of authority most people don't even let themselves imagine. And notice the scope: , earth, seas, and everything beneath. There's nowhere his reach doesn't extend.
The psalm shifts from nature to history. Because God doesn't just control the weather — he moves through nations:
"He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both people and animals.
He sent signs and wonders into the heart of Egypt — against Pharaoh and everyone who served him.
He struck down many nations and brought down powerful kings — Sihon, king of the Amorites, Og, king of Bashan, and every kingdom of Canaan —
and gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance for his people Israel."
This is the résumé section. The psalmist isn't being abstract — he's naming names. . . . These were real rulers with real armies who stood between God's people and God's . And every single one of them lost. The point isn't violence for its own sake. The point is: when God says he's going to do something for his people, nothing stops him. Not superpowers. Not kings. Not geography. Every obstacle became a chapter in the story of God keeping his word.
After all the thunder and history, the psalm gets quiet for a moment. It lands on something steady:
"Your name, O Lord, endures forever. Your reputation carries through every generation.
The Lord will stand up for his people. He will have compassion on those who serve him."
Think about how many names have come and gone. Empires that seemed permanent. Leaders who seemed untouchable. Brands that felt like they'd dominate forever. They're footnotes now. But the name of God hasn't faded. It hasn't needed a rebrand or a comeback tour. And notice what comes paired with the name — vindication and compassion. He doesn't just outlast everything. He keeps showing up for his people while he does it. That combination — enduring power and personal tenderness — is unlike anything else.
Now comes the turn. After building the case for who God is and what he's done, the psalm holds up the alternative — and it's almost embarrassing:
"The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands.
They have mouths, but they can't speak. They have eyes, but they can't see. They have ears, but they can't hear. There isn't even breath in them.
The people who make them end up just like them — and so does everyone who trusts in them."
That last line is the one that should stop you cold. You become like what you . Put your trust in something dead, and something in you goes dead too. Something that can't see, can't hear, can't speak — and over time, you start losing your own ability to see, hear, and speak about the things that actually matter. It's not a . It's a natural consequence. The metric you keep refreshing, the approval you keep chasing, the image you keep curating — if it can't breathe, it can't give you life. The psalmist is asking a question that's still uncomfortably relevant: what are you being shaped into?
The psalm closes the way it opened — with a call to . But now it fans out wider and wider, pulling everyone in:
"House of Israel — bless the Lord! House of Aaron — bless the Lord! House of Levi — bless the Lord! Everyone who honors the Lord — bless the Lord!
Blessed be the Lord from Zion — he who makes his home in Jerusalem!
Praise the Lord!"
Notice the structure. It starts with all of — the whole nation. Then the . Then the . Then anyone who honors God. The circle isn't narrowing — it's opening up. The final invitation isn't limited to one family or one tribe. It's for anyone willing to look at the evidence and respond. The God who chose, who commands nature, who toppled kings, who outlasts empires, who is actually alive — that God is worth every voice in the room. And the only right response to a God who actually does things is to open your mouth and say so.
