Psalm 140 — When the people trying to destroy you use words, not weapons

If you've ever been on the receiving end of someone who knows exactly what to say to ruin you — this was written for you.
didn't ease into this one. He went straight to God with the urgency of someone who needed help now:
"Deliver me, Lord, from evil people. Protect me from the violent — the ones who sit around planning destruction, who stir up conflict every single day.
Their tongues are as sharp as a serpent's. There's venom under their lips."
That image is striking. He's not describing people who punch you — he's describing people who poison you. Slowly. With words. The person who plants doubt about you in a room you're not in. The comment designed to look innocent but aimed to wound. David knew exactly what kind of enemy he was dealing with: the kind that weaponizes language.
kept going, and the picture got more specific:
"Guard me, Lord, from the hands of the wicked. Protect me from the violent who have planned to trip me up.
The arrogant have hidden a trap for me. They've spread a net with cords. They've set snares right along my path."
This is the part that makes dealing with people like this so disorienting — you often don't see it coming. The trap is hidden. The net is spread where you walk every day. David isn't describing a fair fight. He's describing an ambush. And if you've ever been blindsided by someone you thought was safe — a coworker who went behind your back, a friend who was gathering ammunition while pretending to care — you know this feeling. The ground just disappears beneath you.
Right in the middle of this , stopped and anchored himself. Not in a strategy. Not in a plan to fight back. In God:
"I say to the Lord: you are my God. Hear my cry for mercy, Lord.
Lord, my Lord — the strength of my salvation — you have covered my head in the day of battle."
There's something beautiful about that line — "you have covered my head." It's past tense. David wasn't just hoping God would show up. He was remembering that God already had. When everything around you feels like an ambush, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is remember every ambush God has already brought you through. That's not denial. That's evidence.
Now prayed something bold. He asked God directly not to let succeed:
"Don't grant the wicked what they want, Lord. Don't let their schemes succeed — they'll only grow bolder.
As for those who surround me — let the poison of their own lips overwhelm them. Let burning coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into deep pits they can never climb out of.
Don't let the slanderer gain a foothold in the land. Let evil hunt down the violent — swiftly."
This is a hard section. David was asking God to do what courts and HR departments and social callouts can't always do — bring real on people who destroy others with their words and schemes. He wasn't taking revenge himself. He was handing the verdict to the only who sees everything. There's a difference between wanting someone punished and trusting that God won't let evil have the last word. David was doing the second one.
After all of that — the urgency, the fear, the bold — landed somewhere quiet and solid:
"I know that the Lord will defend the afflicted and bring justice for the needy.
The righteous will give thanks to your name. The upright will live in your presence."
That word "know" is doing a lot of work. Not "I ." Not "maybe." David knew. The people who are being crushed right now — God sees them. The people nobody is standing up for — God will. And in the end, the ones who stayed faithful won't just survive. They'll dwell in his presence. That's the final word. Not the slanderer's. Not the schemer's. God's.
