This psalm is only five verses long, and it hits harder because of that. No buildup. Just someone in real pain, saying the raw thing to — and then choosing before it feels true.

Most scholars think 43 was originally the final movement of Psalm 42. They share the same refrain, the same ache, the same arc. But even on its own, this reads like someone's journal — caught between "God, where are you?" and "I know you're still God."

Stand Up for Me 🙏

No warm-up. The psalmist went straight to the ask:

"Vindicate me, God. Defend my cause against people who have no regard for you. Rescue me from the deceitful and the unjust.

You are the God I run to for safety — so why does it feel like you've pushed me away? Why am I walking around in grief while my enemies close in?"

That second part is what makes this so real. It's someone who believes God is their and simultaneously feels abandoned by him. You can God and still wonder where he went. The psalmist didn't pretend otherwise.

Send Your Light 💡

Then the shifted. Instead of staying in the ache, the psalmist asked for guidance — not rescue from circumstances, but a way through them:

"Send out your light and your truth — let them lead me.

Bring me to your holy mountain. Bring me to your dwelling place.

Then I will go to the altar of God — to God, my absolute joy — and I will praise you with everything I have, O God, my God."

Not "fix this." Not "destroy my enemies." Just — send light. Send . Let them lead me back to you.

And notice what he envisioned on the other side: not relief — . . . His future self at the , God — and he let that vision pull him forward. That's what looks like before the feelings catch up.
