The scene opens with God stepping forward — not quietly, not subtly:

The Mighty One — God, the Lord — speaks, and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.

Our God comes, and he does not keep silence. Before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty storm.

He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:

"Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!"

The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge.

This is the whole earth as witness stand. From sunrise to sunset — every corner of creation summoned. And God doesn't ease into it. . Storm. A voice that won't be ignored. The themselves testify on his behalf. When God opens court, there's no question about who's in charge.

The Owner of Everything 🌄

Now God speaks directly to his people. And the first thing he says is genuinely surprising — he's not angry about the . He's not saying "you haven't done enough." He's saying something much more unsettling.

God said to his people:

"Listen, my people, and I will speak. Israel, I will testify against you. I am God — your God.

I'm not rebuking you for your sacrifices — your burnt offerings are always before me.

But I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds.

Every animal in the forest is already mine. The cattle on a thousand hills belong to me. I know every bird in the mountains, and everything that moves in the fields is mine.

If I were hungry, I wouldn't tell you — because the world and everything in it is mine.

Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats?"

Then he told them what he actually wants:

"Offer me a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Keep your promises to the Most High.

Call on me when you're in trouble — I will deliver you, and you will glorify me."

Read that again. God is saying: I don't need your stuff. I own everything. The cattle, the hills, the birds — all of it, already mine. You can't give me something I don't have. The thing you can give me that actually means something? Gratitude. Honest dependence. A phone call when things fall apart — not just a performance when things are fine. That's what he's after. Not your resources. Your trust.

Don't Quote Me If You Don't Mean It 🪞

Now God turns to a different audience. And the temperature drops.

God said to the wicked:

"What right do you have to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?

You hate discipline. You throw my words behind you.

When you see a thief, you're glad to join him. You keep company with adulterers.

You let your mouth run with evil, and your tongue is a tool for deception.

You sit and talk against your own brother. You slander your own mother's son.

You did all of this — and I was silent. So you assumed I was just like you.

But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you."

Let that last part sit for a moment. "You assumed I was just like you." That's the real danger. God's patience gets mistaken for permission. His silence gets read as approval. Someone can quote , post the verse on their wall, share it on social , know all the right language — and be living in the opposite direction. And because nothing bad happened yet, they assumed God was fine with it. He wasn't fine with it. He was waiting.

The Warning and the Promise 🔔

God closes with two sentences — one warning, one invitation:

"Understand this, you who forget God — before I tear you apart with no one to rescue you.

The one who offers thanksgiving as a sacrifice glorifies me. To the one who orders their life rightly, I will show the salvation of God."
