And what comes out of that moment? Not a resignation letter. Not a plan of attack. A song. One that starts as a desperate and ends with David saying he's going to wake up before the sun does just to God. Something shifted in that cave, and you can feel it happen in real time as you read.
opened with raw honesty — repeating himself the way you do when you really mean it:
"Be merciful to me, God — be merciful to me. My soul takes refuge in you. I'll hide in the shadow of your wings until the storm passes.
I'm crying out to God Most High — to the God who will finish what he started in me. He'll reach down from heaven and rescue me. He'll deal with the ones who are trampling over me.
God will send his faithful love and his truth."
Notice where David went first. Not to a plan. Not to an army. Not to his own ability to figure it out. He went to God's . Twice. And that phrase — "till the storms of destruction pass by" — that's someone who has already decided the storm is temporary, even when it doesn't feel like it. He didn't say "if" it passes. He said "till." That's a choice. When everything around you is falling apart — the job, the relationship, the diagnosis, the thing you never saw coming — sometimes the bravest thing you can do is decide "this will pass" and hold on.
Then described what his reality actually looked like. No sugarcoating:
"I'm surrounded by lions. I lie down among people who breathe fire — people whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp as swords."
Then, right in the middle of that terrifying picture, David looked up:
"Be lifted up above the heavens, God! Let your glory cover the whole earth!"
That pivot is everything. He didn't wait until the danger passed to . He didn't say "get me out of here and then I'll you." Right there — surrounded, exposed, lying among people who wanted to destroy him — he shifted his gaze. It's the ancient equivalent of putting on worship music in the middle of the worst night of your life. Not because you feel like it. Because you know who's actually in charge, and you need to remind yourself before your circumstances convince you otherwise.
Then made an observation that probably came with the faintest smile:
"They set a net for my feet. My soul was crushed low. They dug a pit right in my path — but they fell into it themselves."
There's something quietly satisfying about that last line — and David knew it. The people who spent all their energy scheming, strategizing, carefully laying traps... walked right into their own work. This isn't David gloating. It's David recognizing a pattern that's older than he is and still holds true: when people build their lives around destroying someone else, the destruction usually circles back. You've seen it happen. The gossip that eventually isolates the gossiper. The manipulation that eventually gets exposed. The smear campaign that ends up defining the one who launched it. Wake up, my soul! Wake up, harp and lyre! I will wake the dawn.
I will thank you among the peoples, Lord. I will sing your praises among the nations."
Read that middle line again. "I will wake the dawn." He's not waiting for morning to arrive so he can decide how he feels. He's getting up before the sun does. He's choosing to in the dark, before the evidence arrives, before the situation changes. That's not denial — that's defiance. It's the decision to before the answer shows up. And there's something about praise in the dark that changes things. Anyone can sing when the sun's already out. But singing before sunrise, while you're still in the cave, while the threat is still real? That's with teeth.

"Your faithful love reaches all the way to the heavens. Your faithfulness stretches to the clouds.
Be lifted up above the heavens, God! Let your glory cover the whole earth!"
Catch that repeated refrain? Verse 5 said the same thing — "Be exalted, O God, above the ." But it hits completely differently the second time. The first time, David said it while lying among lions. It was a cry of under pressure, almost desperate. Now he says the exact same words from a settled place. Same . Different posture. That's what happens when you choose to through the storm instead of waiting for it to end. You start the afraid. You end it steady. Not because anything around you changed — but because something inside you did.
