Psalms 90 — The prayer that turns mortality into wisdom

And what he wrote is stunning. It starts with awe, moves through the uncomfortable reality of how short our lives actually are, and lands on a request so simple it might be the most important prayer you ever pray.
opened with this:
"Lord, you have been our home — in every generation.
Before the mountains were born, before you shaped the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God."
Two verses. That's it. And they contain more theology than most books. Before anything existed — before geology, before time, before there was a "before" — God was already there. And here's what Moses called him: home. Not ruler first. Not first. Not distant . Home. The place you return to. The place that holds you when everything else shifts. Every generation of people who has ever lived had the same dwelling place, and it wasn't a location. It was a person.

"You return us to dust. You say, 'Go back, children of man.'
A thousand years in your eyes? That's yesterday — already gone. A few hours in the middle of the night.
You sweep people away like a flood. They're like a dream — like grass that springs up in the morning, green and alive at dawn, dry and withered by evening."
There's something Moses understood from watching an entire generation die in the desert: we are temporary. Not in some abstract philosophical way — in the way that grass is temporary. Green in the morning. Gone by night. A thousand years feels like an incomprehensible stretch to us. To God, it's a single yesterday that already passed. We plan in decades. He exists in forever. The distance between those two realities is the whole tension of this .
And the images he chose — dust, floods, dreams, grass — they all share one thing. They don't announce when they're ending. You don't get a countdown. You just look up one day and it's evening.

Seventy years — that's what we get. Maybe eighty, if we're strong. And even the best of those years? Struggle and sorrow. They pass quickly, and then we're gone.
Who truly grasps the weight of your anger? Who fears you the way you deserve to be feared?"
Let that sit for a moment. Seventy years. Maybe eighty. That's it. And Moses wasn't being pessimistic — he was being honest. You spend the first chunk figuring out who you are. The last stretch slowing down. That leaves a few decades of full capacity in the middle, and even those are filled with toil and trouble. We scroll through our phones, plan for next quarter, stress about things that won't matter in five years — and the clock keeps moving. The brevity is the point. Moses wanted us to feel it. Not so we'd despair, but so we'd stop pretending we have unlimited time.
And then there's the part about hidden in the light of God's face. Every shortcut. Every compromise nobody saw. Every version of yourself you thought you got away with. Fully visible. That's not a comfortable thought. It's not supposed to be. Moses was saying: the God who sees all of eternity also sees all of you. And he's not looking away.
After all of that — the eternality of God, the brevity of life, the weight of , the honesty about how short it all is — landed on one request. Just one:
"Teach us to number our days, so we can gain a heart of wisdom."
That's it. That's the whole . Not "give us more days." Not "make the pain stop." Not even "forgive us" — though he easily could have. Just: teach us to count. Teach us to look at our lives with honest eyes and understand what we actually have.
Because when you truly internalize that your time is limited, everything shifts. What you say yes to. What you say no to. How you treat the people sitting across from you at dinner tonight. Whether you keep putting off the conversation you know you need to have. A heart of doesn't come from reading more books. It comes from reckoning with the fact that your days have a number — and you don't know what it is.
The ends with a series of requests — and they're some of the most beautiful lines in all of . turned from honest reckoning to hopeful, open-handed pleading:
"Come back to us, Lord — how long will you wait? Have compassion on the people who serve you.
Satisfy us every morning with your unfailing love, so we can sing for joy and be glad for the rest of our lives.
Give us joy to match the years you've let us suffer — as many good days as we've had hard ones.
Let your work be visible to us, your glorious power to our children.
Let the favor of the Lord our God rest on us. Establish the work of our hands — yes, establish the work of our hands."
Notice what Moses asked for. Not comfort. Not escape. Morning-by-morning . that balances the suffering. Work that actually lasts beyond his lifetime. He didn't ask for an easy life. He asked for a meaningful one.
And that last line — repeated for emphasis, which almost never happens in poetry — "establish the work of our hands." That's the of every person who has ever wondered if what they're building matters. Every parent raising kids in the chaos and hoping something sticks. Every person showing up faithfully to work no one seems to notice. Every act of love that feels like it disappeared into thin air.
Moses stared at the brevity of life and didn't ask God to extend it. He asked God to make it count. And honestly? That might be the wisest prayer anyone has ever prayed.
