Overwhelmed by guilt, Judas returns the silver and takes his own life.
When Judas sees that Jesus has been condemned, remorse hits him hard. He returns the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests, saying he has betrayed innocent blood. They shrug it off. Judas throws the money into the temple and goes out and hangs himself. The priests use the money to buy a potter's field for burying foreigners.
