Joseph's brothers are so jealous of their father's favorite that they sell him to slave traders and fake his death.
Jacob gives Joseph a special robe, and Joseph keeps having dreams about his family bowing to him — which doesn't help the sibling rivalry. When the brothers get their chance, they throw him in a pit, then sell him to Midianite traders for twenty pieces of silver. They dip his robe in goat blood and let their father believe Joseph was killed by a wild animal. Jacob is inconsolable.
