Paul reasons in the Thessalonian synagogue for three Sabbaths until the crowd's success against him forces him to escape the city by night.
After leaving Philippi, Paul and Silas head to Thessalonica, where for three consecutive Sabbaths Paul argues from the Scriptures in the synagogue that Jesus is the Messiah. A significant number of Greek God-fearers and prominent women believe — but the jealous synagogue leaders form a mob, drag Paul's host Jason before the city authorities, and accuse them of treason against Caesar by proclaiming "another king, one Jesus." Jason posts bond, and the believers send Paul and Silas out of the city by night to Berea. Despite the brief visit, the church Paul plants here becomes vibrant enough that he writes them two of his earliest letters — 1 and 2 Thessalonians — full of teaching on the second coming of Christ.
