Babylonian king Hammurabi creates one of history's earliest and most complete written law codes, carved on a black stone pillar for all to see.
Around 1754 BCE, King Hammurabi of Babylon compiled 282 laws covering everything from property disputes to medical malpractice. The code established the idea that laws should be publicly displayed and consistently applied — a revolutionary concept. The original stele, discovered in 1901 at Susa, now stands in the Louvre.
