God makes a binding covenant with Abraham, promising him descendants as numerous as the stars and a land to call their own.
Abraham asks God how he can be sure these promises will come true — he's still childless, after all. God has him prepare a sacrifice, and then in a dramatic vision, a smoking firepot and blazing torch pass between the pieces, sealing the deal. God alone walks through the covenant, meaning he's staking his own reputation on keeping it.
